Measured Drawings and Method of Documentation is aimed to allow us understand the principles of building conservation and methods of documenting it which are measured drawings, written documentation and photographic documentation.

As for our first project - Sketchbook and Journal, we are required to sketch the physical and intangible qualities of the building on site. Be it architectural elements, construction details, site context and cultural elements, we are to portrait them with urban sketching and annotate their special qualities.

I've really enjoyed doing the sketches as it allowed me to improve my observation skills - though 44 King Street is a merely abandon shophouse but it simply portraits "age is beauty" with the beautiful ornamentation, corbels, functional airwells as well as the spatial layout too. With the guidance of our tutor, Mr.Nikhil, I got to learn on urban sketching which I'm very new with and also views to portraits the specialities of our building.

PROJECT 1 - SKETCHBOOK

PROJECT 2 - VIDEO

As for the second part of the project, we are to present 44 King Street by presenting its historical values or culture and architecture.

With the help of Mr Peter Chia, owner of Chia Kong Si and 44 King street, we got to know a thing or two about the history and previous usage of the building with different people that rent it throughout 100 years of history. Other than that, the building itself have some special features such as a curve back wall at the corner, as told by Peter Chia it was due to feng shui reasons. I've learned a lot of feng shui matters that are applied to architectural elements in this shophouse through the interview with Mr. Peter Chia.

FINALIZED DRAWINGs, MODEL and report

To conclude this semester, this module allowed me to get first hand experience on autoCad drawings and get to know what really is a measured drawing, also a whole lot of building conservation knowledge through guidance of our tutor, Dr.Nikhil. Other than that, I;ve learnt about the architectural elements and functionality of a shophouse that has 100 years of history which reminds the importance of preserving old buildings and appreciate them.

It has been a great 8 weeks with fun and lots of hard work with my team mates and truly appreciate the dedication of Dr. Nikhil guiding us, feeding us with knowledge and inspired us throughout this journey.
