BUILDING MATERIALS

PROJECT 1 : solid & void

The purpose of this assignment is to provide students a platform to recognize how a material affects in design process, and how they use material to create the feeling or texture in architecture field. Since that, they will learned how to express the design with the appropriate materials.

Students are required to come out with a basic shape such as cube, sphere, pyramid and etc. with 3 different materials, at least one transparent material. By that, they have to explore more and play with solid & void, how it affects the space inside, and the relationship between light & shadow.

LEARNING OUTCOME

For our first project, I've learned to create spaces by using cuboids in different sizes and also produce light and shadow through transparent and opaque materials. It was quite a difficult task at first but when I saw a rubic's cube object, I was inspired by it and started drafting out how I could create space through it by just using different sizes of cuboids. This project gave me a first hand experience of how selection of materials and placement could give different feelings to people just like how a building would be.

PROJECT 2 : MATERIALITY OF SPACE

This assignment is designed to introduce building materials that are commonly used in the construction industry. The spaces or building selected to study will allow one to understand the reasoning behind choices made by designers in terms of concepts, function use, environmental response, environmental profile, structural requirement, availability of resources and etc. when selecting or proposing building materials.

The final project involves us going to a location, and analyzing the place with regards to the use of materials to create an atmopshere. There is a focus here on the use of materials not only in structural terms of the building, but also in the generation of a mood, programme or feeling in the building. We were to identify the materials used, analyze its physical and chemical properties, why it's used, as well as the effectiveness or suitability of said material in the context of the location. This is a group project done in groups of 5. Individually, we had to select a specific site in the location, and conduct analysis there.

For my group, Gary, Hariish, Adam, Aswad and I selected a cafe cum hotel located in the hidden streets of China Town.

LEARNING OUTCOME

After all the hectic projects, we've finally come to a project which requires a site visit, which means we get to have fun with our groupmates ( hooray ). So the reason that we've chose The Front Door cafe was because of its retro 60s look and how it maintain raw materials for its interior. Other than that, the hotel- Grocer's Inn which is connected to the back area of the cafe, had a vintage motel interior and also maintain old floorings and furniture. I've learned more about the materials used in both the buildings by its physical and chemical means and how they create different feelings to people inside it.
