PROJECT 1 : JOURNEY OF 5 SENSES

In the group of 5, we are required topropose 2 schemes for a Walkway Space themed ‘journey for the 5 senses’ and design the space in the form of semi-open architecture by using two contrasting spatial types of your choice which is linear & concentric.

Throughout this project, we are able to:
1. Identify & explain different spatial types in architecture, and how they inform spatial use & experience
2. Identify & analyze case studies to inform the design project
3. Create tectonic expressions of different spatial typologies which impact on the uses and experiential conditions of space
4. Generate design through conscious consideration of section-plan relationship with considerations of human scale, natural light, materiality and textures
5. Produce drawings (both 2D and 3D), modelling & verbal presentation to communicate & visualize architectural design and ideas.

PRECEDENT STUDY

                              PROJECT 2A :

GENIUS LOCI: Site Analysis & Concept Development

In this project, it is separated into two project, 2A and 2B.

Project 2A is a group work focused on the analysis of the Micro & Macro site of Bukit Cina including its community. We are required to translate and incorporate the information in Video method, which both creativity  & important information must be incorporated and required.

PROJECT 2B: CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

An individual work focused on the development of our own concept, and also site to be chosen. In which the concept will be further developed in Project 2, a VIC, which represents the genius loci of Bukit Cina.

We are required to develop a concept based on our intepretation on Bukit Cina, in which our concept will eventually become a visitor intepretive center which strongly represent the Genius Loci of the site.  The site I chose is Site 1, which is located at the top of Bukit Cina, with three-sixty view of whole Malacca, distant from traffic, harmonious.

INITIAL CONCEPT

PROJECT 3 : VISITOR INTERPRETIVE CENTER

After the conceptual development, more concrete ideas were added in to design a Visitor Interpretive Center.

The interpretive centre will serve two purposes:

- To provide a physical point of reference with visual significance that keeps alive the culture/history/memory/essence of the site

-To provide accommodation to house and display relevant material and interpretive material for public access and information.

Solutions relying heavily on landscape are encouraged.

Visitors should be inspired and informed in ways that somehow express the spirit of the place (genius loci).

Total floor area: 450sqm (covered internal spaces), 2 storeys

ROOM REQUIREMENTS for the space are as follows:

Reception

Foyer / Public gathering space

Display / Exhibition / Gallery space

Book / Souvenir shop

M&E / Utilities space(s)

Office

Toilets

Pantry / cafeteria

Storage

1 MISC Space to be defined by designer (10 rooms / spaces in total)

The above rooms are RECOMMENDED. The TOTAL floor area of the building should be approximately 450 sqm. The designed should be developed taking into account the climate, culture and context of the building. The building must EMPHASISE THE USE OF MATERIALS WITH HEAVY THERMAL MASS (CONCRETE, NATURAL STONE AND/OR BRICKWORK). The use of timber (if any) should be limited to roof structures and/or secondary elements and finishes. We are required to indicate MATERIALS and show an appreciation of BUILDABILITY in your final presentation.

Throughout the projects in design studio 3, I've learnt how to express poetic elements into my design and thinking process. For the final project itself, not only I'm able to design the building in respect to the SWOT analysis and also apply the culture and heritage elements into it in order to express its poetic meanings.
